Perform active studies in the fundamental biology. A specialist in the studying the species structure, patterns of variability, microevolutionary processes, features of reproduction and the formation of a variety of life strategies. A significant part of the activity is carried out in the studying and preserving fish biodiversity, assessing threats to existence, monitoring and assessing the current state of rare and specially protected fish species listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation. Realize long-term research on salmon fish, organizes and participates in expeditions to the Far East and North. Author of more than 120 scientific articles in leading scientific journals, 6 monographs and other papers. The author and developer of provisions in the field of conservation of fish biodiversity, co–author of the "Strategy for the conservation of the species of the Red Book of Russia - Kamchatka rainbow trout" (2007). The author is the compiler of the Red Book of the Russian Federation, section "Fish". He is a laureate of the Lomonosov Prize of the 1st degree for a series of works in the field of studying and preserving biodiversity. The author and teacher of a number of lecture courses given at the Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov, including courses on the fish system, private ichthyology, fish microevolution, instrumental methods in ichthyology, etc. Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Interdepartmental Ichthyological Commission of the Russian Federation on Recreational Fisheries.
