Place of employement: Russian Federal Research Institute Of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO)

In the 1980s, V. A. Bizikov was an active participant in long-distance oceanic expeditions to study the biological resources of the Pacific and Indian Oceans using manned scientific underwater vehicles of the experimental base "Gidronavt" of the USSR Ministry of Fisheries, based in Sevastopol.

In the 1990s, he led the VNIRO squid resources research in the Bering Sea, as a result of which the reserve was estimated and the commander squid fishery was discovered in the West Bering Sea zone and in the Karaganda subzone of the East Kamchatka zone. Since 2006, he has been leading the VNIRO resource research of commercial invertebrates (crabs, shrimps, squid, scallops) and marine mammals. Working as a deputy director, he directs the preparation of total allowable catch (TAC) scientific justifications and summary materials of commercial invertebrates, algae and marine mammals possible catch. Under his leadership, specialists of the Rosrybolovstvo research organizations in 2016 developed rules for regulating the fishing of priority crab and craboid species, which laid the methodological basis for modern forecasting and management of stocks of commercial crabs and craboids in the seas of Russia on the basis of a unified long-term strategy for regulating their fishing.

In 2008-2010, V. A. Bizikov coordinated the joint work of VNIRO and PINRO specialists on the development of a set of measures to regulate and restrict the fishing of Kamchatka crab in the Barents Sea. The implementation of these measures ensured a stable growth of the Kamchatka crab commercial stock: The TAC of this valuable type of biological resources in the Barents Sea has increased more than 3 times - from 4.0 thousand tons in 2010 to 12.6 thousand tons in 2021.

V. A. Bizikov made a great contribution to the development of modern information systems for analyzing data from resource fisheries research. He was the initiator and head of the work on the creation and development of the specialized fisheries Geographical Information System (GIS) "Cartmaster", which is currently implemented in all marine branches of the Russian Federal Research Institute Of  Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO). GIS "Cartmaster" is used for processing data from resource research, building maps of the distribution of fishing objects and parameters of the marine environment, estimating the size of fishing stocks. This is the main domestic software package for the preparation of scientific materials justifying the TAC and the recommended catch of aquatic biological resources in the seas of Russia.

V. A. Bizikov made a significant contribution to the protection of the Russian fishing interests in the Antarctic. From 2005 to 2014, he annually participated in the work of the Russian delegation to the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), was the representative of Russia in the CCAMLR Scientific Committee. He actively participated in the development of the "Strategy for the development of the Russian Federation's activities in Antarctica for the period up to 2020 and for the longer term".

V. A. Bizikov is one of Russia's leading experts on cephalopods, his work in the field of growth, systematics and evolution of cephalopods has received wide international recognition. In 2008, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Evolution of the shell of cephalopods (cl. Cephalopoda)" in the specialty "Zoology".
